BIRTHDAY PARTIES
As a member of NBCA you can have a very special birthday part at NBCA. Our faculty members will lead the party in arts or crafts projects, lasting approximately 1 1/2 hours, leaving time for cake, presents. Choose from a variety of themes and projects. For more information or to schedule a party, call the office.

 
 
 

PRIVATE LESSONS
NBCA offers private lessons for individuals and groups in the visual arts, theater, dance, and music. The cost, is dependent on materials cost and the number of students enrolled.

NBCA's Summer Art Camps were terrific this year!
Check below to see what we did and hope to see you in 2010!

Summer art camps are held five days a week, in half-day sessions, with a reception on Friday for parents and friends. All classes are held at the NBCA, located in downtown North Adams, unless otherwise noted. Art on the Farm classes are held at various farms in the area.

All week-long, half day camps are $125 per child for NBCA Members or $150 for non-members. $50 discount for a sibling per one full registration fee. All day Castle Hill Theatre Camps are $195 for NBCA members; $225 for non-members. Art on the Farm and Classes at the Clark have separate pricing.

Children are welcome to sign up for a morning and afternoon session, when appropriate, and have their lunch at NBCA between 12noon and 1pm. Lunch sessions are supervised by NBCA staff. Must bring your own lunch.

Summer Art Camps @ NBCA

July 6-10

Morning:
Garage Band:
Ages 10-13
A wonderful creative tool for artists and aspiring composers of all ages. Using the program, students will learn basics about music composition such as meter and form and use them to compose their own original pieces of music. There will be a song presentation at the end of the camp.

Afternoon:
Mad for Mud III:
Ages 5-7
Get your hands dirty! We will use air dry clay to create coil pots, pinch pots, and learn slab techniques. Get ready to dig into the mud!

Photography Camp:
Ages 10-13
Students will consider their lives, their city and the concerns as subjects to create a book for their own photographs. They will learn about street photography, portraiture, narrative and constructed imagery, and other photographic approaches, as well as how to make and edit images for a book and write accompanying text.

July 13-17
Morning:
Maya III:
Ages 10-13
A 9 ft. high by 20 ft. wide pyramid covered with action figures and other toys; this is Maya III, an installation designed by artist, Jarvis Rockwell. Create your own installation piece designing a mini structure to which you will attach recycled toys. Other projects during the week (related to toys) will include painting, drawing, creating a toy, and print making. We will also visit Maya III at the Gallery and meet the artist.

Afternoon:
West African Drum, Dance & Song:
Ages 5-9
Join Lara & Yael from Marafanyi for an exciting journey to Africa! We will learn traditional rhythms, dances & songs and explore indigenous instruments from the region. This camp includes a service learning art component. Parents are welcome to participate.

Graffiti Art & Creative Expression:
Ages 7-9
Using design, lettering and symbolism students will learn about graffiti and culture. We will examine contemporary graffiti artists, and students will create their own original tags while learning the importance of self-expression.

July 20-24

Morning:
Kids on Canvas:
Ages 5-7
Discover your inner creativity on canvas. Students will paint on canvas using tempera and acrylics and use themselves as the subject. Young artists will further develop their artistic skills while discovering their own personal style.

Afternoon:
Textile Creations:
Ages 7-9
Tie-dye, fabric assemblage/collage, loom weaving, knitting and latch hooking are just a few of the activities in this course. Students will learn to create elegant textured works of art through mixed media textile creations!

AutoBLOGography:
Ages 10-13
This course is an autobiography of the student spanning from their birth to the present and ongoing. The product may also serve as a personal journal and photo album. At the completion of this course the students will feel more comfortable adding pictures, video, and other entries to their blog.

July 27-31
Morning:
Print Making with Nature:
Ages 5-7
Discover all the wonderful textures nature has to offer! We’ll create our own unique print making items to create 2 and 3-dimensional collages and art pieces. We’ll create a variety of projects, including keep-sakes and gifts for loved-ones.

Afternoon:
Spaces and Places – Architecture:
Ages 10-13
Imagine a place to call your own! Students will explore the fundamentals of architectural design; bringing his or her unique idea of what a special space would be like, from an abstract concept to a clear representation we will construct our own model.

Kirigami Paper Arts:
Ages 7-9 This variation of origami allows us to make fabulous three-dimensional paper sculptures, collages and mobiles. Explore the beauty of textured papers to make original multidimensional creations.

August 3-7
Morning:
Sculpture and Collage:
Ages 5-7
Young artists will have fun working with clay, paper, yarns, wood and many other materials. Students will be given activities that increase their knowledge of how objects are perceived in space. We will hold an exhibition on the last day.

Organic Jewelry Making:
Ages 10-13
Create beautiful bracelets, necklaces, anklets, pins, belts and other fashion accessories using natural elements. We’ll explore using hemp, vines, small pieces of petrified wood, and wire, with beads and stones to create ready-to-wear jewelry.

Afternoon:
Recycled Art:
Ages 5-7
Using everyday materials students will create original sculptures, jewelry and useful items. We will explore works by contemporary American artists and discuss the importance of recycled material.

Rock-N-Art:
Ages 7-9
Petroglyphs to Stalagmites! Explore and learn about rocks, fossils, minerals and crystals and how to combine them with art. This is truly a unique and educational camp for kids!

August 10-14
Morning:
West African Dance with Marafanyi!:
Ages 5-9 Connecting mind, body and spirit, students learn to express themselves through a powerful and lyrical vocabulary of steps for traditional dances that are hundreds of years old! Explore the dance that was here way before Hip Hop and learn how these two art forms connect! Parents welcome to participate.

August 17-21
Morning:
Warm and Fuzzy Forms:
Ages 5-7
In this lively workshop, we will take our own drawings, make patterns, and learn how to construct the most cuddly, lovable, and adorable soft pets that you have ever imagined. You will design your own creatures to take home and nurture. We will exhibit them on the last day of class.

The Garden Project
Ages 5-9
July 6 - August 27 Mondays & Thursdays, 9-11am.

Realize how much fun a garden can be! We use gardening as a vehicle to encourage children to make good food choices, build a love of nature, stimulate social interaction, facilitate cultural exchange, and more. Ready, Set, Garden!

Painting the Landscape
Ages 7-9
July 6 - 10, 9am-Noon
Cost: $125 NBCA members; $150 for non-members
Students will explore the natural landscape and paint farm life. We’ll talk about natural habitats and agriculture, while painting the land and mountain surroundings.

Cartooning on the Farm
Ages 7-9
July 20-24, 9am-Noon
Cost: $125 NBCA members; $150 for non-members

Explore different illustration techniques to create your own comic book. Develop characters found on the farm and learn different ways to grid pages. Finish the camp with a bound comic book written and illustrated by you!

Natural Building
Ages 10-13
August 10-14, 9am-Noon
Cost: $125 NBCA members; $150 for non-members

Gather feathers, straw, sticks and other natural materials to build your own outdoor creations. Projects will include making birdhouses, planters, hanging baskets, and more.

Green River Farm
West African Drum, Dance & Song
Ages 5-9
July 13- 17, 9am-Noon
Cost: $125 NBCA members; $150 for non-members

have a fun holistic approach to drum, dance and song with a focus on joyful exploration! Find out how these traditional rhythms, dances & songs and indigenous instruments from West Africa are an important part of farming life in Africa!

Natural Sculpture
Ages: 7-9
July 20 – 24, 1-4pm
Cost: $125 NBCA members; $150 for non-members

Get inspired by the farm and make sculpture! Using natural materials from the farm environment, projects will include making a life size nest and rock towers. Instructor: Amanda Hartlage


Natures Art Box
Ages: 5-7
Aug. 3 - 7, 1-4pm
Cost: $125 NBCA members; $150 for non-members

Plants, insects, flowers, and art, from Van Gogh to Eric Carle, come join us on the farm where students will explore and make their own nature inspired creations.

Sheep Hill
Garden Detectives Ages 7-10
July 20-24, 9am-Noon
Cost: $125 NBCA & WRLF members; $150 for non-members

Get out your spy glass to discover what some creatures and plants look like up close and friendly. Leslie-Reed Evans, naturalist and director of Williamstown Rural lands will guide us in our discoveries, informing us of what we have found. We will draw, paint and create a variety of projects during our week of discovery. (PS. Spy glass included.)

Clay Play Ages 5-7
July 27-31, 9am-Noon
Cost: $125 NBCA & WRLF members; $150 for non-members

Students will start with simple sculptures that can be formed in their hands. They will then be inspired by their own imagination while creating 3-dimensional forms. We will also enjoy making useful objects and vessels from clay.

Japanese Arts with Nova Rockwell
Ages 5-9
July 27-31, 9 a.m.-12 noon
Tuition: $125 for Clark Art and NBCA members; $150 for non-members

Inspired by the exhibit of Japanese art at Stone Hill Center, students will be doing print making, brush ink painting, origami, pottery projects and more—all based on a long tradition of Japanese arts. Classes will be held in the studio art classroom, at the beautiful new Stone Hill Center designed by ontemporary Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
